In this episode, we hear from Matt Shinderman, Associate Professor of Teaching in Natural Resources and Sustainability at Oregon State University- Cascades Campus. Matt talks us through a bit of his journey to the Central Oregon region, and how, by happy accident, he never ended up leaving. With over 20 years experience teaching in and around the terrain of the High Desert, Matt has a wealth of knowledge to share with both his students and the broader community.

In our conversation, we explore everything from wildlife crossings and habitat connectivity to alpine species like the American Pika. Matt also shares insights into how the University partners on native plant projects and collaborates with farmers, as well as state and federal agencies, to support restoration and sustainable land management across the region and beyond.

With Central Oregon, and Bend in particular, growing rapidly, we are fortunate to have a satellite campus of Oregon State University right here in our region. As one of the instructors who helped develop the University's Double Degree Program, Matt has also helped shape how students approach sustainability from multiple perspectives. Through teaching, research, and partnerships with local organizations and agencies, Matt helps bridge academic knowledge with real-world environmental challenges facing our landscapes.
