In this episode, we hear from Kavi at The Environmental Center of Bend. Kavi has been the Rethink Waste manager, but is now helping lead a new sustainability initiative called Reuse Deschutes. We dive into some dirty details of waste and what this new program could look like in our regional capacity.

This new project would require time, commitment, and community action for a successful, sustainable launch. But it's forward thinking, and genuinely exciting. Creating a community hub to reuse and reduce takeaway materials could help shift how our community thinks about convenience and waste.

Kavi mentions how Reuse Deschutes strives to provide reusable takeout containers that people can return to participating locations to be washed and used again. Instead of throwing away packaging after a single meal, the containers stay in circulation, dramatically reducing single-use waste. Building a culture of reuse will take community and business collaboration, along with some specific logistics about how everyday people are willing to rethink convenience.

Building more sustainable systems often starts at the local level, with community members willing to try something new. If Central Oregon can lean into this program and help make it a success, our region can become a model for other communities looking to build practical, community-driven reuse systems of their own.

Reuse isn't just an idea, it's a system communities like ours can build together.
